ESG reporting platforms: what UK rules require of the software
ESG reporting software is judged by one test: can it produce what the rules ask for, with an evidence trail, year after year.
For UK companies that means disclosures structured for UK SRS, SECR fields from Schedule 7, the right year’s DESNZ factors and, for groups with EU operations, ESRS.
This page sets out the four kinds of platform, the requirements a UK buyer should test, and when a spreadsheet is enough.
Four kinds of platform
Sustainability reporting solutions come in four shapes
Most buying mistakes come from comparing products that do different jobs.
Carbon accounting engines
Calculate Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from activity and spend data, apply conversion factors, and hold the inventory.
Disclosure management suites
Assemble the report: narrative, tables, sign-off workflow and, increasingly, digital tagging. Often the “ESG management software” in a search.
Questionnaire and supplier platforms
Collect value-chain data from suppliers and answer repeat questionnaires such as CDP from a stored library.
General tools
Spreadsheets and business-intelligence tools: no licence cost, full control, and only as auditable as the method written beside them.
Many products span two categories, and a vendor’s own documentation is the place to check which parts are native and which are partner integrations.
CDP is a questionnaire, not a platform in this sense, but answering it from the same data as the annual report is one of the main reasons companies buy the third category; see CDP reporting.
What to test
Eight requirements a UK buyer should test
Each row is a requirement in a UK or EU instrument, or a consequence of one. Ask to see it working on your own data.
| Requirement | Why | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Location-based Scope 2, with market-based as extra information | UK SRS S2 requires the location-based figure | UK SRS S2 ¶29(a)(v) |
| DESNZ factors matched to the activity year | The 2026 set is for activity falling mostly in 2026, not the filing year | DESNZ 2026 factors |
| A flag on the 2025 to 2026 electricity factor change | DESNZ changed the method; a year-on-year fall can be methodology, not performance | Methodology ¶1.13 |
| SECR fields: kWh, emissions, intensity ratio, method, efficiency action, prior year | The directors’ report content, with the UK and offshore split for quoted companies | Sch 7 Parts 7 and 7A |
| UK SRS structure and a record of reliefs used | Listed companies state which transitional reliefs they use | FCA PS26/19 |
| Scope 3 by category, with method per category | UK SRS S2 and the GHG Protocol both work category by category | Scope 3 Standard |
| ESRS data points, if a UK group has EU entities in scope | The revised ESRS apply from financial years beginning 1 January 2027 | DR (EU) 2026/1563 |
| An audit trail from source document to disclosed figure | What an assurance provider will follow, if assurance is chosen | PS26/19 assurance statement |
A platform described as “ISSB-aligned” should show the IFRS S1 and S2 structure; for a UK listed company the relevant text is UK SRS, which differs from IFRS in a small number of places.
Digital tagging is a separate question: the IFRS sustainability disclosure taxonomy, whose latest update closed for comment on 28 September 2026, is a tagging vocabulary and creates no new requirement.
What listed companies must disclose is set out in UK SRS requirements.
Filing
From platform to the annual report
ESG disclosures in the UK are not filed on a separate portal: SECR sits in the directors’ report, and UK SRS disclosures in the annual financial report.
So the last step of any platform is getting its output into the accounts, in the format the accounts are filed in.
Companies House announced on 9 June 2026 that from April 2028 it will require all UK registered companies to file accounts in iXBRL through commercial software.
Ask any platform how its tables and narrative move into the accounts production software you use, and who does the tagging.
The deliverables each regime asks for, whatever tool produces them, are listed in carbon compliance services.
Companies House says it will require iXBRL accounts through commercial software from April 2028.
The statutory basis was not stated in the announcement, and the filing periods are unchanged.
Build or buy
When a spreadsheet is enough, and when it is not
No UK rule requires ESG reporting software; every requirement is on the output.
A single-site company with one regime can meet SECR with utility bills, the DESNZ factor set and a spreadsheet, provided the method is written down.
The case for buying grows with the number of sites, entities and frameworks, and with any plan to have the figures assured.
Whichever route, the model should belong to the company, in a format another person could reopen.
Whether to pair software with an adviser is covered in ESG consulting; which frameworks apply at all is in sustainability consultancy.
Groups with EU subsidiaries should check CSRD scope first, under the amended Accounting Directive, because ESRS data points multiply the platform requirement.
Signals that point to buying
| Signal | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Many sites or entities | Manual collection stops scaling |
| Several frameworks on one dataset | One source of truth avoids figures that disagree |
| Assurance planned | The audit trail must survive a third party |
| Supplier data at scale | Collection needs a portal, not email |
| Recurring questionnaires | A stored answer library pays back each year |
Buying
Price, lock-in and the questions to ask
Price
Only a price a vendor publishes on its own site is a sourced figure; note the date. Where none is published, treat the product as enterprise level, price not published, and ask for a written quote.
Data export
Can you export every input, factor and calculation in an open format — and on leaving, not just while subscribed?
Factor updates
Who loads the June DESNZ release, how quickly, and how are prior years treated when a method changes?
Evidence
Does every figure link to its source document, with who changed what and when?
Standards coverage
Which frameworks are native, and which are templates a customer maintains?
Independence
If an adviser recommends the platform, does the adviser earn anything from the sale?
This page names no product: no platform has been tested here, and a ranking would be an opinion dressed as a finding.

Frequently asked
ESG reporting platforms: questions answered
What is ESG reporting software?
Software that collects environmental, social and governance data from across a company, holds the evidence behind it, and produces disclosures, questionnaire answers or report sections. It ranges from carbon accounting tools that calculate emissions, through disclosure-management suites that assemble the report, to supplier platforms that gather value-chain data.
Does a UK company need ESG reporting software?
No UK rule requires it. SECR can be done with utility bills, the DESNZ conversion factors and a spreadsheet. Software earns its place when data comes from many sites or systems, when several frameworks draw on the same data, when an assurance provider will follow the audit trail, or when the same questionnaires recur every year.
What should ISSB-aligned or UK SRS-ready software do?
Structure disclosures around the four pillars of governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets; hold location-based Scope 2 as UK SRS S2 requires; track Scope 3 by category with the method used; record which transitional reliefs a listed company is using under the FCA’s rules; and export data in the IFRS sustainability disclosure taxonomy if digital tagging is needed.
Will UK companies have to file in iXBRL?
Companies House announced on 9 June 2026 that from April 2028 it will require all UK registered companies to file accounts in iXBRL through commercial software. That is the registrar’s announced plan rather than law in force, and it concerns the accounts filing, so check whether a platform’s output can be carried into your accounts software.
Should we build or buy an ESG reporting platform?
Build, in a spreadsheet or a business-intelligence tool, where one or two regimes apply and data comes from a few clean sources. Buy where many sites, entities or frameworks share the data, where the audit trail must survive assurance, or where supplier data must be collected at scale. Either way, write down the method so another person could reproduce the figures.
How much does ESG reporting software cost?
Only what each vendor publishes. Many do not publish prices; the honest description of those is “enterprise level, price not published”. Where a vendor does publish a price, read it on the vendor’s own pricing page and note the date. A characterised market range is not a sourced figure.
